Thoughts on Star Wars Kinect Game

What excited many gamers when Microsoft first demonstrated there new add on device the Kinect was the demonstration of Star Wars Kinect. It looked amazing and many older gamers felt that there childhood dreams of being a Jedi were about to come true. Of course there was still some skepticism that this would work as good as the demo suggested, but no mater what people were very excited. Do not think of this as a review of Star Wars Kinect, it is more of a look at how when Kinect works it is great, but when it does not work so good its a royal pain in the rear end.

So after having the chance to play Star Wars Kinect for the better part of a month how do I feel about it? Well its weird very weird, I do not really want this to be taken as me bashing the game but it is certainly how I feel. You see when Star Wars Kinect works it is absolutely amazing no Kinect game has impressed me like this one has, yet about two minutes after I feel like this it is spoiled by something.

The very first time you are required to use “the force” by pushing your arm forward to take out a bunch of droids it really is quite spectacular. I must admit after doing this for a few minutes I really started to buy into that this could be the future of video games, that is juts how impressed I was. But then it was time for me to make my character walk across the screen and all that excitement, that giddiness, that wonder was gone as soon as it took me a good five attempts to get my character to move to the next area. For me this is not only the biggest issue with Star Wars Kinect but the biggest issue with the Kinect.

You see when you take away a controller you lose having complete control over your character, not just here in Star Wars but in every single other Kinect game I have played also. There have been rumours that the next Kinect on Microsoft’s next Xbox will be far more advanced. Which sounds amazing but they have to get being able to make your character move right.

Thoughts on Star Wars Kinect

There is a good variety to the game play of Star Wars Kinect. With five game modes that are all pretty different and take you through iconic set pieces of the Star Wars universe. Such as Pod Racing and Light sabre duels. Also for the very first time in a video game you get to cause some serious damage as the Rancor. I also have to mention if you have ever wanted to make Han Solo dance then this is your chance. Star Wars Kinect offers a fun tongue in cheek take on the Star Wars universe, and if you have a family then it is a great deal of fun.

What I think would have made Star Wars Kinect the absolute must have Kinect game of all time is if it had with it a little analogue stick. Something like a little Nunchuck like the Nintendo Wii uses. Just something that will let you move a character around on screen like you would when using a controller. I know that the point Microsoft have with the Kinect is that you are the controller, but I have yet to play the Kinect and not wish I was using a standard controller. Of course some games have no need for this and this is where Kinect shines. In the Pod Racing parts of Kinect Star Wars you really do feel like you are taking part in the epic races from Episode 1, this is a great example of how Kinect can really be an amazing device.

Its things like this that make Star Wars Kinect such a frustrating experience for me. If I had to say is this a good or bad game then I would have to say good, but what makes it frustrating is that if there was not these control issues then it would have gone from being good to being great. Star Wars Kinect by far is the best game that has been made for Kinect and it is a good sign of what is to come in the future. I just really hope that the future of gaming does not have us giving up to much control.
